Cloud Computing Will Always Be Your Best Bet

Most often than not people question about the adoption of cloud computing and its benefits to their organizations, but today, we’re going to clear some of that conjecture and show you how it can make the most for you in the long-term.

The fact is that most of us in the technology community are quick to move onto new technology trends, such as cloud, edge, etc., and we do so with the expectation that others will follow. But when they don’t, or if they question it, we’re taken aback and these tendencies repeat on an endless loop.

This has been the case whether it was the movement to minicomputing 30 years ago, the rise of the PC LANs, client/server, service-oriented architecture, and now, the cloud. All of these trends were heavily hyped and billions of marketing dollars flowed through while enterprises leveraged such promoted technologies to solve all kinds of business problems.

While some of these technologies were a net positive, most of them were net negative. This led us into believing that the investment in technology change did not produce an ROI when all factors were considered. In other words, not enough people asked “why?” along the way.

So, fast forwarding to 2021 today, our past selves guide us to question the present and future of the cloud. And those who ask deserve a logical, well-thought-out answer. But the true answer depends on the characteristics of the current state of IT of a company and their readiness to adopt technology as they consider options like the cloud or any other associated technologies.

It’s a fact that cloud computing is not always the right fit for every workload. Based on research, around 25-30% of the existing on-premises workloads will not provide an ROI in the cloud. That’s because they don’t have platform analogs, it’s just not economically viable in other ways, and that path will result in a net negative for the business.

And even if we get to more modern applications that have platform analogs in public clouds and workloads that seem economically viable, they might not always have a compelling business case to move to the cloud at a particular time. Also, issues unrelated to technology like the business being sold, a low tolerance for risk, or company culture factors, contraindicate the move to the cloud in that very instance for that application and its attached data.

All of this is mostly logical and even if the cloud fit is obvious, we should still always have a healthy skepticism around a major move like that or any technology. With all of that in mind, we think that as of today, cloud computing is your the best bet.
